By presenting my story through this archive, each reader is at liberty to identify aspects that they relate to, or aspects that they don’t relate to — an exploration process mirroring exactly what it meant to me to be second-generation, American Born Chinese. For the most part, however, ABCs are drifting further and further from their heritage as they assimilate into American culture away from the support systems set up by their ancestors. In the past, these support systems used to provide for the hiring of its own members into jobs owned by other member and the pooling of money to help https://simple-accounting.org/ newer immigrants start their own businesses. Today, however, fewer Chinese participate in these organizations due to the lack of interest among the younger generations. ABC stands for “American-born Chinese” and is a person born in the United States by Chinese parents. Most American-born Chinese are born from immigrant parents who came to America after the US Immigration Act of 1965 relaxed limits on East Asian immigration. American-born Chinese tend to be more educated as a group than the general population due to their parents usually coming from academic or professional backgrounds.

When you learn Chinese, you’ll come across plenty of Chinese slang – the kind of vocabulary and expressions you’re more likely to hear on the street when talking to real people than in your textbook. To say English-speaking brings the focus onto the language difference. When I was on the East Coast visiting over 20 English-speaking minis-tries, I was encouraged to change my ABC ministry vocabulary. It began to dawn on me, after observing and speaking to over a dozen groups or their leadership, why these were called English-speaking. I realized that they were OBC-style minis-tries conducted in English.

Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) Programme.

While my family’s traditions educated me on Chinese customs and language, I can’t reflexively hold everyday conversations with native-speaking friends. And while I hold an American passport and celebrate 4th of July, the looks I get in a supermarket in Minneapolis or a restaurant in Texas make it clear enough that I don’t really belong here either. I’m both tied to and rejected from Chinese and American culture, and the process of finding where exactly I stand is dynamic and turbulent. Many times, it was easier to embrace one at abc chinese slang the expense of shame for the other. Before long, the term ABC took on another dimension of meaning – ‘Asian Between Cultures’.
