For the most part, however, ABCs are drifting further and further from their heritage as they assimilate into American culture away from the support systems set up by their ancestors. The title alludes to Chinese American assimilation; it is slang used to highlight their nationality and ethnic origin while also clarifying that they speak English, hence the acronym ‘ABC’. The graphic novel is a story with themes about identity & personal transformation and how they can affect change in one’s relationships and the perception of oneself. This is accomplished through the contrast of an assimilated Chinese American (Jin/Danny) and stereotypical immigrants (Wei-Chen & Chin-Kee). In both stories, there is a confrontation that reflects the racial struggle of the people involved, which takes a toll on their relationships.
When you learn Chinese, you’ll come across plenty of Chinese slang – the kind of vocabulary and expressions you’re more likely to hear on the street when talking to real people than in your textbook.
